Licensure/Enrollment Requirements -- >
  Licensure/Enrollment Requirements

  • Requirements for PE licensure:

  • COMITY
    * the FE (EI) exam +
    * an ABET accredited B.S. engineering degree (or an acceptable equivalent) (or a graduate degree in an engineering curriculum that is ABET accredited at the undergraduate level COUPLED WITH either a non-ABET BS degree in engineering, a BS degree in engineering technology, or a BS degree in a related science) +
    * 4 full years of qualifying engineering experience +
    * the PPE (PE) exam

    If your only degree is an engineering technology degree, you are not eligible for PE licensure in Mississippi and you should not submit an application. This is a state law which neither the Board staff nor Board members may waive.
    BOTH exams are required regardless of extensive education or experience or being licensed without exam(s) in another state. This has been a requirement of Mississippi law since 1970.
    We do not offer temporary, short-term, or "one project only" licensure.
    At the end of each month all fully documented comity applications are reviewed by a committee; those applications meeting all the requirements are approved for licensure. Therefore it is entirely possible to receive a license within a month, depending upon date of application and if the applicant actively pursues the necessary paperwork.
    Rule 4.04 states, "The certificate of licensure for a Professional Engineer comity licensee will bear the date the application is approved by the Board in accordance with Board procedures." Therefore, an applicant is not allowed to offer services, respond to a request for proposals, or begin a project until he has been issued a license to practice in the state of Mississippi.

    INITIAL (first-time) (only offered to MS residents)
    * an ABET accredited B.S. engineering degree (or an acceptable equivalent) (or a graduate degree in an engineering curriculum that is ABET accredited at the undergraduate level COUPLED WITH either a non-ABET BS degree in engineering, a BS degree in engineering technology, or a BS degree in a related science) +
    * the FE (EI) exam +
    * 4 full years of qualifying engineering experience subsequent to graduation +
    * the PPE (PE) exam

    Co-op experience: applicants who complete an approved co-op program may (your choice) be given up to 6 months of experience "credit", but be aware that other states may not recognize a PE exam taken before a full four years of experience was accrued after graduation.

  • Engineer Intern Enrollment Requirements
  • In order to qualify for this exam, Mississippi law and Board regulations require an ABET accredited B.S. degree in engineering, or an acceptable equivalent, or a graduate degree in an engineering curriculum that is ABET accredited at the undergraduate level COUPLED WITH either a non-ABET BS degree in engineering, a BS degree in engineering technology, or a BS degree in a related science.
    This exam is offered only to Mississippi residents OR currently enrolled engineering students (undergraduate and graduate) at Mississippi State University, University of Mississippi, or Jackson State University. These students may apply for this exam through their dean; all other applicants must apply through the Board office.
